An Overview of Dragon King Temple

    MORE
Formerly named as “Chi Jian An Lan Long Wang Miao”, the Temporary Palace of Dragon King Temple nestles in the ancient Zaohe Town 20km northwest of the Suqian proper. The complex, initially built in the the Year of Emperor Shunzhi in Qing Dynasty and rebuilt in the 23rd Year of Emperor Kangxi, has undergone renovation and expansion in years of Emperor Yongzheng, Qianlong and Jiaqing, thus turning into an official enclosed compound consisting of four courtyards and three gates full of northern characteristics and covering an area of 36 mu (15 mu=1 hectare). During five of his six inspection tours to the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, Emperor Qianlong resided here where then a pavilion and a stone tablet was specially built and efforts were put into renovation, hence the name “Temporary Palace of Emperor Qianlong”. In 1983, Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government announced it as “a key unit of cultural relics under the provincial protection” in order to protect this precious cultural heritage. The State Council in June 2001 proclaimed it as “ a key unit of cultural relics under the state protection”. It has been known as an integral part of the historical culture lying hidden in Grand Canal in China which was then added to the UNESCO’s list of World Cultural Heritages in June 2014.
